Hilton Hotels Unveil New Name And Logo

This past week Hilton Worldwide (formerly Hilton Hotels Corporation) unveiled its new corporate name and logo designed by Landor.

"With the addition of the word 'worldwide' the new logo unites all members of the organization across all parts of the globe with one shared vision for success. The platinum and gold stylized H evokes quality, stature and the richness of Hilton’s heritage. The two halves are reflective, which are a reminder of the company’s storied past and vibrant future, and the open curves are welcoming, symbolizing the world of travel by suggesting the round edges of the globe, the arch of a bridge and posts of a bed."

MTV's Brand New Look

MTV launches a spanky new look – as its international brand refresh rolls out across the company's network of 64 channels, created by MTV's creative directors from around the world in collaboration with UK-based studio Universal Everything.
The word refresh is used rather than rebrand as the MTV logo is still recognisable - the new logo (above) is, in fact, the old logo - but in MTV's new look, the logo remains black on a white ground - no colour, pattern or texture will ever adorn it - which is a change from MTV of old where the idents were based on the logo being played around with.

"Now the logo is sacred," says Roberto Bagatti, Vice President of Creative for MTV Networks International and Creative Director of MTV's World Design Studio in Milan, who oversaw the project.

So if the logo's the same, what's new? MTV Networks International now has a new flexible typographic navigation system for displaying onscreen information. The MTV logo remains in a fixed top left position onscreen at all times and acts as an anchor for the new system of information display - with the title of the current programme always appearing immediately to the right of the logo in a blue progress-bar so viewers can guage where they are in the current programme. To the right of this info is where viewers will occasionally see information in yellow text boxes: yellow denotes what's coming up next on the channel. And to the right of this, appears what's coming up later - always in a pink info box. The typeface used for this primary information is Pharma Bold Condensed by Swiss type foundry Optimo.

As well as the main programme info, more playful messages will appear in the lower third of the screen - and for this text, there is a collection of secondary brand typefaces to choose from, depending on the mood of the message. The eight secondary typefaces were selected for their expressive or emotion-inducing nature - and to add an element of fun to the onscreen identity of the channel.

The faces, shown above, are American Typewriter Light Italic, Balloon Bold, Bigcity Maxi, Cozzap Open, Flash ND, Futura SB Bold Italic, Sahara Bodoni and Signpainter House Brush. Here's an example of how these will be used onscreen:

The first six new channel idents make it clear beyond doubt that MTV is sporting a slick new look - based on an idea of "pop x 1000%" which was, says Bagatti, "the rebrand project's title and mantra."

Award Winning Identities from Cannes Lions 2009

The 56th annual Cannes Lions (www.canneslions.com) International Advertising Festival recently took place in France. This is its second year to include awards for design. Among the many winner in the wide-ranging design category, below are some of the notable identity projects.

Corporate identity for German ad agency, Lukas Lindemann Rosinski.

"When Bernhard Lukas, Arno Lindemann and Bent Rosinski started their own ad-agency, they were looking for a logo that contained something personal from each founder. They discovered a particular point: The length of their names were proportional to their actual heights and were proportional to each other (60%, 100%, 80%). And thus, the concept for their corporate identity was born: Size Matters."

Identity for Global Handwashing Day (Proctor & Gamble) by Landor. Nearly 80 countries participated in the launch of the first Global Handwashing Day.

"The act of washing one's hands with soap can dramatically reduce the incidence of diarrheal diseases and pneumonia, which together account for the majority of children's deaths around the world. The goal of Global Handwashing Day is to make people aware that effective prevention is simple and inexpensive...

The characters holding hands communicate that when water and hands are brought together with soap, health is the result—and health is worth smiling about."

Branding for Dubai-based Aswaaq Supermarkets by Landor.

"Dubai has a broad ethnic mix, with each nationality bringing its own background and flavor to the country... Aswaaq aims to become a daily destination, community centric hub and a celebration of diversity. In Muslim culture its almost unheard of to promote emotional expression through human faces. Our client felt the identity strategy of engaging the community through cultural diversity and emotional exchange was compelling enough to challenge convention, creating a breakaway brand that was so daring for the Middle East region."

A symbol for Brazil's No Homophobia campaign by Indústria Nacional & Dialogo Design.

"According to Brazilian researchers, 70% of its gay population suffers some sort of discrimination. Every second day a homosexual is killed because of homophobia... The worldwide known rainbow flag was used to reveal boldy and instantly the violence against homosexuals."

Identity for The Alliance for Climate Protection's “We” campaign by Collins.

"Our approach was to make an idea as complex and potentially intimidating as stopping global climate change feel personal and achievable. Since the audience is everyone, we flipped the “m” in the word ME to make a bigger, more inclusive idea: WE."

Corporate Identity for Hudson Gavin Martin, a New Zealand-based law firm specializing in intellectual property, by Alt Group.

"Colloquial wisdom has it that all good things come in threes. Three is more than a partnership – it’s a team. Culture and customs offer up all sorts of threesomes, humorous and otherwise. The identity uses the copyright, trademark, and registered symbols to directly reference the firm's core business."

Logo for Brazilian mobile phone network Claro, by Gad.

"Attributes such as strength, shine and light guided all creative processes of the brand, whose personality also needs to transmit happiness and Brazilian aspects. The new brand represents the shape of the sun, which also combined the transparency as a playful effect. The sun rays reinforce the concept."

Identity for the Jamie Oliver's Recipease retail stores by Williams Murray Hamm. An interesting concept for a store:

"These Recipease shops will be places where you can assemble a brilliant meal in around 20 minutes in our kitchens, using ingredients we’ve prepped for you ahead of time; pick up a delicious freshly-made meal to go; or attend classes where you’ll learn how to make every part of a dish from scratch, no matter what level of cooking you’re at."

Logo for Office Games, a spoof athletics fundraiser benefiting Richard House Children's Hospice, by The Partners in London.

"They didn't want it to appear too 'charity' and pressure people into taking part, instead the focus was on the fun and enjoyment of the event."

Qatar 2022

Qatar is making its case for the 2022 World Cup. The identity shown above conceived by Future Brand artfully combines the concepts of international football and Qatari heritage, officials said.

"The 32 pentagons represent the surface of a football, using colours that reflect, what is claimed to be, the natural heritage of Qatar—warm, luminescent colours of sand and sun which spiral inwards, alongside the azure blues of the sea."
