The man behind the design of BMW's Z8 roadster and now the owner of the brand that bears his name, Henrik Fisker, has announced a new deal with BMW that covers the supply of engines and other components for future Fisker models.

It’s Light, Jim, But Not as we Know it: BMW Looks Ahead with Laser Lighting Technology

Most car manufacturers have already adopted the use of LED (light-emitting diode) technology for the lights on their new models – at first for the rear and subsequently for the front daytime running lights. Premium carmakers are even offering full LED headlamps on some of their models, like BMW in its new 6-Series coupe and convertible.

But the Bavarian firm's engineers didn’t put out the lights (pun intended) and head home after their latest achievement. Instead they started working on what they say is the next logical step in car light technology: laser.

BMW Joins Skynet’s Army with Ultimate…Self-Driving Machine

Dr. Nico Kampchen is driving on the A9 motorway from Munich to Nuremberg, or rather, he is trying to since, as usual, there is a lot of traffic. However, unlike other drivers around him, he isn’t stressed one bit.

While it could be because he seated inside the soothing cabin of BMW’s new 5-Series, it’s not. Dr Kampchen is conspicuously calm because his car is actually driving itself, accelerating, braking and even overtaking while the driver simply monitors the situation.

German Auto Industry's Progress Threatened by Lack of Engineers

Despite the global economic crisis, German automakers are reporting record profits and sales in the first half of 2011. Therefore, if they can prosper under such dire conditions, then the future looks more than bright, correct?

Well, while true, the German auto industry is actually facing one little tiny problem that seems to be slowing their expansion plans: a shortage of engineers to design the new cars they intend to produce. The reasons for this shortage are the aging, thus slowly but steadily retiring, workforce and the loss of interest in technical studies by the young.

iPhone Video Review of New BMW 1-Series

British motoring show Fifth Gear flew over to Germany to try out the new 2012 BMW 1-Series hatchback.

The TV show's crew was going to film the first test drive of the Bavarian model on a normal camera but a mishap forced them to shoot the entire clip through one of their Apple iPhones (it probably looks better than it sounds).

SPIED: New Diesel-Powered BMW X6 M Spotted on the 'Ring?

There has been a lot of talk lately about BMW's plans to introduce its first-ever diesel-powered 'M' model. Just last week, the Detroit-Bureau spoke to BMW M Manager Brian Watts who confirmed the German company's interest in an M-badged diesel model.

The news site also cited inside sources to say that the plans calls for the development of a highly modified version of BMW's 3.0-liter straight-six oil-burner fitted with three-turbochargers developing around 500-horsepower and well over 600 lb-ft of peak torque. This engine would be fitted on M-badged versions of the 5-Series and the X6 crossover.

Just for the record, the Z4 sDrive35i and sDrive35is with 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engines will continue.

Vancouver Riots Victim will Continue to Pay for her Burned Down BMW M5!

We suspect that you remember our story about the young woman trying to save her E60 BMW M5 from the manic hooligans during the Vancouver riots that erupted in June after the Canucks lost to the Boston Bruins for the Stanley Cup.

As seen on several videos, the young woman, who was later identified as Jazmin Perez, tried in vain to save her BMW M5 from being destroyed. Perez had parked her car outside a store in downtown Vancouver, and when she returned, she found the mob burning down her V10-powered bimmer “to silver metal” as she told CBC News.

Made in the USA: Weak Dollar Boosts Local Production

The US dollar has been dropping relative to other currencies including the Euro and the Yen, hitting a historically low level compared to the last 30 years. This means that imported goods of all kinds, including automobiles, are now more expensive in the States. However, on the other hand, the weak dollar has made US exports cheaper and therefore more competitive in the rest of the world.

This is especially good news for US car manufactures notes Edmunds.com analyst Michelle Krebs: “The weak dollar is good for manufacturers in the US, whether they're the Big Three of German or whatever, because they can export at an advantage”.

Germany's Luxury Brands Unaffected by Global Economy Slump

The auto industry hasn’t escaped the drama affecting the stock markets due to the US credit rating downgrade and the problems in the Eurozone. This month has been the worst ever since November 2008 for the Euro Stoxx Automobile and Parts Index as it lost €35 billion ($50 billion) or about 19%, of its value.

However, despite the slowing global economy, it is luxury carmakers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi rather than mass-market brands, like Fiat and Renault, that can withstand its effects better.

All-New 2012 BMW 3-Series Sedan Spied Completely Undisguised?

These low-resolution photos allegedly picturing a completely undisguised 2012 BMW 3-Series sedan made their way on the F30Post forums over the weekend.

While not entirely sure, they do seem to be derived from some sort of promotional material - be that a video or a scanned brochure. In any case, they do look to be in line with what we've seen up until now in our spy shots.

Not surprisingly, the design of the next generation 2012 3-Series sedan appears to follow an evolutionary path blending the shape of the current model with styling elements from the new BMWs and especially the latest 5-Series.

Canadian Police Baffled by BMW 5 Series Driven off a Boat Launch into the Sea

As one of the more popular executive sedans in the market, the BMW 5 Series tends to get some unwanted attention, but what took place at Fleming Beach in Victoria, Canada, during the early hours of Thursday is baffling, to say the least.

Victoria police were called to the Fleming Beach boat launch at around 5 a.m. Thursday morning by local fisherman that discovered a late, grey-green colored BMW 5-Series sitting around 30 metres (close to 100 feet) from shore.

BMW's i3 EV Hatch and i8 Hybrid Sports Coupe Live and in the Flesh

We got our first look at BMW's eco-friendly i3 and i8 concept cars during a presentation in Germany at the end of July, but while the Bavarian firm released a bevy of videos showing off the two cars and their technological highlights, all films were the product of computer manipulation.

Lucky for us (and you), a Youtube user was in the right place at the right time filming both the BMW i3 pure electric hatchback and the i8 hybrid sports coupe during a photo shoot in Chicago.
